1st Days Back to School

Katelyn's 1st day of Preschool at Summit Academy was Thursday, August 25, 2011.  She started before Lauren (who stayed home with Grandma so Katelyn and I could have a special morning together) and was really excited to go to school and wear her school uniform.

Katelyn did so great marching right into her room and getting all settled into her school routine.  Her Aunt (who teaches at the school) came and checked up on Katelyn and reports that Katelyn did really great her first day and when the teacher asked who should talk when the teacher is talking, Katelyn raised her hand and said "nobody"

Katelyn had such a fun time and could even tell me the names of 3 girls and boys that she had played with that day. She LOVES school and is so excited for her next class.  (She goes every Tuesday and Wednesday from 8:30-11:30)

Lauren started 1st grade this year!  She attends American Preparatory Academy and has Miss Ruff as a teacher.  This year Lauren gets to go the ENTIRE day and gets to eat her sack lunch at her desk every day.  She was excited to be going back to the same school as last year (this is a first) and already knows half the kids in her class.  It was so nice going into her classroom and seeing some familiar faces as well as good friends.  Especially her friend Laurel ("it's just like Lauren ,only an 'l' at the end instead of an 'n'"  according to Lauren)

Lauren didn't seem quite as happy as she normally does after school.  She said the best part about school was her 3 recesses and lunch (I think she really only has 2 recesses and had PE).  She said she kept falling down at recesses and got a few bruises.  She seemed pretty melancholy but she wouldn't really talk about her day.

The next morning Lauren wouldn't get out of bed. When I tried to get her dressed she pushed and kicked and cried "I don't want to go to school, I don't want to go to school"  It broke my heart seeing her like that and not wanting to go. I felt terrible about making her get dressed and off to school anyways. I tried to make it as fun as possible in getting dressed and ready for school but she wouldn't smile.  Then when we arrived at the school she said that the reason she didn't want to go to school was because yesterday they had a fire drill.  Fire drills really scare Lauren. She is terrified of loud noises and the possibility of fire. She HATES fireworks and is terrified someone or something will catch on fire.  I hope that is all that was really bugging her!  I asked if she wanted me to walk her into school and she did.  When we got there she was really good about taking out her school work and sitting right down at her desk. I quietly told her teacher that Lauren was having a rough day and she assured me she would take good care of Lauren.   I am really hoping Lauren has a great day today!!

Tuesday both Lauren and Katelyn were having their 2nd day of school. I tried to get Lauren to at least smile for pictures and this was all I could get. I was grateful Katelyn was so happy and excited for preschool.  I am hoping that the adjustment from half-day Kindergarten to full-day 1st grade won't be so bad. Tomorrow is a short day so hopefully that will help.  My fingers are crossed that when I pick Lauren up from school today that she had a much better day and will be much happier about going to school tomorrow!   Here's hoping!

Your girls are darling!! Thankfully, kids are pretty resilient...she'll be happy and loving school before you know it! Sometimes I wish I could be fly on the wall and out at recess just to see how they're doing. I think I worry too much! I hope they have a fun school year!

They are both so cute! I love my boys dearly, but when I see others with their cute girls, I wish I had a couple of my own! I love both of their uniforms, I told you before, but I wish public schools wore uniforms too!

Poor Lauren. I hate loud noises too (a balloon popping just about puts me into a panic attack--seriously--and I've NEVER liked fireworks). I think maybe it's because I have really sensitive hearing (I'm always turning the TV down, not up.) Unfortunately, the best I can do is try to live with it, since I don't think I'll ever love (or be comfortable) with anything loud. Blah.
